Who am AI?: The Portrayal and Stereotypes of Chinese, Vietnamese, and Filipinos in AI Art
Abstract
AI art is a relatively new form of technology that has become viral across social media, threatening artists’ livelihoods. AI processes thousands of art pieces to learn patterns and create new pieces of art based on text or image prompts, and it generates art in minutes. Taking advantage of the vast knowledge of these AI art programs, specifically Stable Diffusion, Lexica, and Midjourney, this study investigates whether or not there are trends when art of Asian individuals (specifically Chinese, Vietnamese, and Filipinos) are generated. This study seeks to determine what kind of stereotypes are prevalent in art and the AI program itself, gaining more insight on what beliefs are built into technology and people’s ideologies.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What’s the social media for?In addition to tracking the traits and stereotypes in the images I generate through the AI art programs, I wanted to track public reception of them as well. I’m hoping to answer questions like “Which concepts are more popular, and what are potential reasons why?” or “Do images with this trait gain more engagement?”
2. Why are you researching this topic?AI art is definitely one of the more controversial topics of this year, and I’ve seen it on my feed a ton. I wanted to research it more as both an artist and future engineer! After looking into the science behind it, I found papers on how discrimination and biases show up in certain programs and prompts, and I wanted to research it more closely in a community that I am close to as an Asian American.
3. Where can I read about your progress?I post updates on my blog at https://basisseniorprojects.com/tucson-north/author/mindy_d/Comment with any questions or ideas that you may have!
4. Why did you pick Chinese, Filipino, and Vietnamese people as the ethnicities to study?I chose China, as it is one of the most well-known and most synonymous with Asian culture; Vietnam, as it has ties to China but is a Southeast Asian country; and the Philippines, as its culture is less mainstream and a bit further from the East Asian sphere. I’d definitely want to expand my research into West and South Asia in the future!
5. Where will the results of this study be published?I’ll be posting the results on my blog and in the research paper section of my carrd.
6. Are you interning somewhere for this research project?Yes I am! I'm working at Creative Machines under Joseph O'Connell and working on projects to test out how AI can be used to sculpture designs and prototypes.
7. Why is this page pink?I thought it was cute! I really like this shade of pink and yellow.
